Homeless Sister Begged. I Said NO. Family: 'MONSTER!' Me: 'KARMA.'
I need outside opinions on this, seriously. My whole family is split down the middle and I'm starting to question myself, even though I know deep down I did the right thing. I think. So, my sister, Jenna. She’s always been… a lot. Always needing money, always needing a place to crash, always a sob story. I’ve bailed her out so many times I lost count. Lent her thousands of dollars she never paid back. Let her live with me rent-free for six months once, only for her to trash the place and move out in the middle of the night. The worst was when she "borrowed" my car and totaled it, then had the nerve to say it was my fault for not having better insurance. That was like, two years ago. We barely speak. Well, she called me yesterday. Crying. Said her landlord evicted her, her boyfriend dumped her, lost her job. Basically, she's homeless. And she asked if she could stay with me. Just for a little while, she promised. And I said no. I just said no, Jenna, I can’t. My husband Mark thinks I'm 100% right. He said, "She's an adult, she made her bed. You’ve done enough." My best friend Sarah too, "Protect your peace, seriously. You can’t keep setting yourself on fire to keep her warm." But my mom? Oh my god. She’s absolutely furious. Called me cold-hearted, said I'm letting my own sister sleep on the streets. My aunt Linda is giving me the silent treatment. Even my cousin Emily, who *hates* Jenna, was like, "Dude, that's pretty brutal, though. She's family." And I know, I know it sounds bad. But after everything? Was I really wrong? Would you have done the same?
